It’s hard to argue with the success of the “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film with global box office sales at north of $250M as I write this. Released in theaters in mid-October 2023, it has now been recognized far and away as the highest-grossing concert film of all time by Guinness World Records.
More recently, there was also a lot of fanfare for “Renaissance”, Beyonce’s concert film which came out behind Taylor’s just last month, in December 2023, which to date has grossed $44M globally. Both Taylor and Beyonce’s films were released to theaters only (for an exclusive limited-term window) through AMC.
The question is, are these box office successes forecasting a trend and a continued resurgence of the concert film genre in theaters or were these exceptions? I dive into a lot of key considerations in this article. Would welcome your thoughts/feedback on whether this is a fad or a trend.
