This article puts forth that homophobia in America was fostered by the Eugenicist, R. W. Shufeldt. Better known for his animosity towards African-Americans, he was nevertheless also engaged in what he saw as protecting the white race “from within” by identifying queerness as a menace caused by inferior genetics. The article concludes that he unintentionally brought about the LGTBQ movement by making it permissible to engage the topic of homosexuality in pubic even if it was for nefarious purposes.
